Coffee with Michael Swearngin. I first met Michael at a gas station, literally at the gas pump. He made a commit about some graphics he saw in my car which lead to a lengthy conversation about design, art and changes in those worlds. I looked up his work on-line and was impressed, even attended one of his art gallery shows. Years later our paths crossed again, this time at an office supply store, we chatted for quite awhile. Destiny? I don’t know, but at least it warranted a cup of coffee.

As it turns out Michael is an amazingly interesting person. He has an incredible appreciation for life, the people he has encountered along his path and his own spirituality. He reflects on all his experiences, good and bad, in a beautiful positive light. Considering they include a debilitating horse-bucking accident, a viral infection that nearly killed him and the loss of a dear friend. His outlook is remarkable. He is grateful for his experiences, the friends he has made and those that have influenced his creative course.

Michael traveled the world as a young man, including 27 Countries; he has been a horseman, a graphic designer, a print-maker, and surveyor. He now makes his living as a fine artist. His work shows in various galleries from Oregon to Texas. He is known as the Contemporary Cowboy. His work is graphic, bold, honest and energetic. There is a real simplicity to his paintings but they still have a lot of depth, sort of like Michael himself. I really enjoyed our 2-hour visit and look forward to our next encounter. I like the man and his work. If you get a chance check out his web site or visit Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale.
